trans_city developed an aesthetically intriguing, yet cost-efficient strategy for upgrading the public appearance of Taborstraße, an important commercial street in Vienna’s second district. For five intersections along the length of the street – each identified as a local hot-spot or critical urban space – sidewalks were widened into plaza-like spaces with natural stone pavements and new furnishings as well as plantings.
The newly paved plazas appear as elliptical figures within Taborstraße’s network of streets and sidewalks. These graceful contours generate highly legible urban spaces within the otherwise indefinite boundaries of the existing streetscape.
The surface is composed of light and dark granite pavers, laid out in a sunburst- like gradient. Light in the middle, dark on the edges, it is a composition that strikingly emphasizes the centers of the newly defined public space.
The intersections of Gredlerstraße and Am Tabor were the first two phases of this five-stage project to be realized.
