Since its construction in 1910 as a workshop and storage building for a carpenter, the existing house had previously been altered a number of times, most recently in 1980. The present addition not only enlarges the living room, it also solves a number of functional difficulties within the layout of existing building itself, such as the entry zone, access to the garden and the staircase. The addition was designed as a winter garden built out of wood and glass; light, sun and the view to the garden were primary concerns. The construction of the projecting roof and horizontal fins are dimensioned provide views while they optimize solar penetration in winter and eliminate solar gain in the summer months.
