emergency_rooms is a planning and development strategy for low-cost, rapid-erection housing estates that targets a housing market traditionally ignored by the field of architecture. Through the integration of custom-tailored architectural and urban planning procedures with modular wooden building systems, emergency_rooms is designed to rapidly deliver housing and urban infrastructure for urgent needs. emergency_village is a pilot project for the emergency_rooms concept. Focusing on the earthquake-damaged village of Sant‘Angelo near L’Aquila in Abruzza, emergency_village proposes a rapid-response settlement for 700 inhabitants that will house displaced persons until the old town of Sant‘Angelo can be rebuilt.
